About the role
- The Mechanic B will pursue a career path qualifying as a Mechanic A. They perform electrical or mechanical maintenance type work on power plant components and equipment. As a Mechanic B (Mechanical) they work on mechanical equipment in maintaining, repairing and installing power piping systems, associated valves, tanks and vessels and various types of rotating mechanical equipment such as fans, blowers, pumps, motors, etc. using various field power tools and precision measuring equipment and have a working knowledge in the following areas: confined space entry, basic pumps, coupling alignment, bearing maintenance, pipe fitting, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, rigging, scaffolding, mechanical drawing, boiler tube repair, math and industrial safety, machine shop, conduit bending, basic electricity, scaffolding, skyclimber/hanging platforms, crane operation and welding (GTAW, SMAW). As a Mechanic B (Electrical) they work on the electrical equipment to install, repair and maintain utility electrical equipment, read schematic drawings and engineering prints using testing devices to troubleshoot problems within electrical components, circuits or equipment. Core Responsibilities Perform mechanical and electrical maintenance tasks across facility equipment and systems. Safely operate and maintain hand and power tools for routine and emergency repairs. Carry out standard maintenance functions, including inspections, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance. Apply and follow safe work practices in all tasks, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, procedures and policies.
- Work assigned shifts that may include rotating schedules, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to meet the operational needs of the department. Obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within one year of placement in the department. Obtain a NYS/NYC Asbestos Handlers License within one year of placement in the department. Uses various tools, field power tools, and precision equipment. Writes accurate and concise reports. Read and interpret schematic drawings and engineering prints. Maintain a working knowledge of confined space entry, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, rigging, reading mechanical drawings, industrial safety, and basic electricity. Performs asbestos abatements and maintenance associated with powerplant equipment based on operational needs. Occasionally, operates a Con Edison vehicle. Successfully advances through career path training. - Experience The successful candidate must be able to learn to read blue prints and sketches and be able to demonstrate good oral and written communications skills. Required Prior demonstrated experience in general construction, control systems, mechanical work and/or electrical work. Required Must have experience in installing rigid tubing for pneumatic and hydraulic applications. Must be able to use and be trained in the use of special tools and equipment required to perform corrective and preventative maintenance of power plant equipment and piping systems. Must be able to prepare components for welding/ mechanic fitting according to specifications. Must be knowledgeable in industrial safety. Must be familiar with rotating equipment troubleshooting and maintenance Must possess a high regard for personal accountability, be well organized, detail-oriented, and dedicated to providing exemplary customer service in all areas of responsibility. Must have familiarity with computer systems and working proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Project, and Word. Maximo experience preferred. Licenses and Certifications Driver's License Required Physical Demands Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations Ability to climb ladders and stairs Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces) Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers Unload materials from delivery vehicles and deliver equipment and materials to various operating facilities Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment Additional Physical Demands The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
